GOG: Dronelord Michael Bjella releases new album on August 30th

The southwestern state of Arizona is best known for its desert landscapes and grand canyons. Yet GOG mastermind Michael Bjella paints a very different picture of his native homeland with "Ironworks". Recorded in a late 19th century blacksmith shop, where several members of his own close family toiled, GOG crafts a subversive ode to the death of the American dream using source sounds and atmosphere. This is the sound of physical labour, of blood, sweat, and tears. Metal rings on metal, shaping flesh and bone in the eternal pulse of the anvil and the searing flames of the furnace. "Ironworks" gives enslavement through capitalism a sinister soundtrack. With GOG, Michael Bjella has established himself as a major artist in the ambient field. Releases such as "Heavy Fierce Brightness: Spells of the Sun" have let to the project being described as "blackened psychedelic doomdrift dronelords". Collaborations with renowned artists in the field included splits like "Malpais" with WILLIAM FOWLER COLLINS, or "Fruition of the Occult" with APPARITIA. Now, Michael Bjella enters a new dimension of sound with "Ironworks", which is probably his most deeply personal yet also highly political musical statement so far. Initially issued as a vinyl-only release at the end of 2012, “Ironworks” has been repackaged in lavish digipak format and is easily one of the best dark ambient releases in years!

WOLVSERPENT: "Perigaea Antahkarana" to be released in September

It may have been three long years since WOLVSERPENT's watershed first LP 'Blood Seed' saw the cruel light of day, but the Boise, Idaho duo have been hard at work on its successor. They've just completed work on their sophomore release (and Relapse Records debut),  a four song 80 minute opus entitled 'Perigaea Antahkarana' The album was recorded this past autumn with producer/engineer Mell Dettmer (SUNN 0))), BORIS, ASVA, EARTH, EYVIND KANG) in Seattle and in Idaho at in their home studio, and features another apocalyptic performance from Blake Green (guitar, vocals, keys) and Brittany McConnell (drums, percussion, violin, viola).

After a two year writing period, WOLVSERPENT first recorded the 'Perigaea' 2012 demo (pronounced "pear-a-guy-a") between December 2011 and January 2012, and chose to keep it under wraps until the timing was right and their doomed hymns realized their full potential. After nine months and several rewrites had come to pass, the demo was unleashed. They're now offering it as a free stream on Bandcamp and as a download or tape cassette via their official site here, but be forewarned: the upcoming full-length version 'Perigaea Antahkarana' will be an entirely different two horned beast, a completely new manifestation of the ideas heard on the demo.

NIXA: Doom/Stoner/Sludge Metal from Florida (USA)

NIXA recorded a live demo at Pinecrust Studio’s in Miami (Ryan Haft of Capsule and Jonathan Nunez of Torche tracked, mixed and mastered it) and are currently making the rounds at various shows around the South Florida area. The drummer, Michael Rodriguez is also in a post hardcore band called Secret Arms which has been reviewed a bit around those spheres. Andrew Herrero (bassist) and guitarist Anthony Mandolini, have been in multiple bands on the East Coast from Long Island, NY down to Miami, FL.

Shadow Kingdom Records signs LOST BREED & FUNERAL CIRCLE

SKR has both classic LOST BREED albums complete and scheduled to launch in stores in October.

Back in the 80’s it was fairly common for bands to move to LA to try and make it big. LOST BREED is among the many bands that made that trip from NY to LA. They soon met up with the legendary Scott “Wino” Weinrich, whom at the time had already had 2 Saint Vitus records under his belt, was soon to be releasing a 3rd Saint Vitus record, and was also in the process of restarting The Obsessed back up again. Even with all of those irons in the fire, he started writing and jamming with Lost Breed. With his main roots and influence coming from the Maryland Doom Metal scene, it’s no surprise that Lost Breed fits right in there stylistically. With that said, Wino did lay a nice foundation for the band to build and grow from.
Wino only appears on their first Demo and doesn’t appear on either album since at some point he probably realized he had too much going on and 2 bands to focus on were enough. With all of the music out there, it’s going to be a big surprise for people who haven’t heard this band yet.



They have extremely unusual songwriting skills that not only make you scratch your head, but also bang your head at the same time. Once the music of Lost Breed settles in, it’s quite the listening experience and after a while you might think to yourself how does something that sounds so complex and disjointed work together so well? So, what does this sound like? We’re still trying to figure this out. In short, it just does, but if you’re looking for a reference point, then start with The Obsessed and some old Soundgarden and play both records at the same time. “The Evil in You and Me” is arguably the first “Doom Rock” album to ever exist. Some might call it “Stoner Rock” (we wouldn’t agree), but whatever it is, it’s pretty groundbreaking.

“Save Yourself” picks right up where “The Evil in You and Me” ends. This album is a little more straightforward in the songwriting department, but it still has that quirky charm about it. It’s probably a little more doomy and with that a little more accessible than “The Evil in You and Me”. Both “Save Yourself” and “The Evil in You and Me” are essential and you definitely need both if you like this style of music.

These guys might have had a short-lived career, but we probably got the cream of the crop out of them before they called it quits. They were a band that came out at the wrong time when the world wasn’t ready for them. It’s a shame because if they were more well known, they would probably influence a ton of bands. The one thing that’s great about Lost Breed is that this stuff never gets stale. You discover something new with each listen and after years of hearing them, the well of new sounds never runs dry.

The clip was made by our Doom brethren and photographer Mike Wiener, who's also driving the German Doom Metal Forum. I don't know when he found the time while shooting for Doom Metal Front magazine but he managed it anyway!

The soundtrack is called "Dead Man" and will be released on the forthcoming album of Hamburg based Stoner Rock band HYNE. They have rocked the stage!

RED FANG announce album title and reveal cover artwork

RED FANG will return this October with its third studio album titled "Whales And Leeches" on Relapse Records. For the new album, the Portland, Oregon-based group worked with producer Chris Funk (Decemberists) and mixer Vance Powell (The White Stripes, Raconteurs, Kings Of Leon). This same team helmed RED FANG's last CD, "Murder The Mountains", which Alternative Press magazine hailed as "a near-masterpiece of tangled tar pit riffs and whisky-and-bong-hit vocals."

We are back from EYEHATEGOD's 25 Years-Anniversary-Tour gig at Groovestation, Dresden(GER). It was an amazing 1,5 hours long Sludge-annihilation. We felt like 50 degree celsius and sweat run down our backs like rivers!

We've talked to Jimmy Bower, Mike Williams, Joey LaCaze, Brian Patton and Gary Mader about a quarter century being around and were played a snippet from a track of the upcoming album directly coming from Jimmy's iPhone.

AUTOPSY: The masters of Sludge/Death Metal have returned with a gurgling new oldschool album

July 2nd marked the return of Autopsy, with the group’s sixth studio opus of horror and all-out madness, titled “The Headless Ritual,” released through Peaceville Records. JIMMY GLITSCHY: New Disko Stoner release on Fuzzmatazz Records

Fuzzmatazz records recently released the new album of "Jimmy Glitschy - Der Einarmige
Karussellbremser" as CD and Vinyl. The musical style is "DISKO STONER" - not kidding.




Was passiert wenn ein Exil-Schwede und ein grimmig dreinblickender backenbärtiger Typ die letzten 2 verlorenen Seelen in einer gottverlassenen Kneipe im schwedischen Uppsala sind? Ganz klar, es wird eine Band gegründet!

Ebenso logisch ist es dann auch, dass der Band Mittelpunkt nicht ins schicke Stockholm oder ins ach so hippe Berlin verlegt wird, sondern im eher beschaulichen Jena zu finden ist. Doch dies scheint nur auf den ersten Blick willkürlich, hat sich die Saalestadt doch in den letzten Jahren zu einer Art Stoner und Noise Mekka rund um Bands wie Dyse, Rodeo Queen etc. entwickelt.

Dass Jimmy und seine Kumpanen auch musikalisch eher unkonventionell veranlagt sind, zeigt zum Einen die Bandbesetzung inkl. einer Lady an den Drums und einem Frontdancer (!!!), als auch die bandeigene Erfindung eines neuen Subgenres: Disco-Stoner!

Was sich hinter diesem scheinbar unversöhnlichen Mix verbirgt, zeigten Jimmy Glitschy bereitsauf ihrer im August 2011 erschienenen 6-Track EP "Dance! Or! Die!".

Meint man hier in einigen Momenten staubig, heißtrockene Ausflüge zu Queens-of-the-Stone-Age-artigem Dessert-Rock zu vernehmen, fliegen einem just ne Sekunde später bratzigste Disco-Knarz-Bässe um die Ohren, an denen ohne Zweifel auch Electric Six Gefallen finden dürfte.

Io Pan, Io Pan , Io Pan !! The wild hunt through Arcadias harsh mountains is about to begin. Battle call you say? Well, while sinking into Obelyskkh’s new opus maximus this could be the first impression coming to mind. And not off the rails that is. The new album by Franconian stalwarts Obelyskkh combines the monstrous riffage they’re known for since their 2012 album “White Lightnin’” with a new approach to songwriting. Retrieving their sound in a much more thronging way than ever before Obelyskkh seem to be picking up speed and urgency. And this not only musically but also in their pure existence. “Hymn To Pan” was fully recorded just a few months after its predecessor “White Lightnin’” but already showing quite a few new facets of the band.

In Greek mythology, Pan is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music, and companion of the nymphs. We do not really put this into nexus here, do we? Just give this album a spin and you’ll understand how the approach and attitude seems to form itself in utter sound hedonism, but not denying content. From this perspective “Hymn To Pan” remains indeed a battle call, loud, aggressive and in roaring manner, but rooted in a fearless presentation of something precise, something conceived. “Hymn To Pan” was mastered by the mighty Brad Boatright (Sleep, Tragedy, High On Fire, From Ashes Rise, Integrity among many others).

The album is released on CD, digital and 2LP, containing 3 sides. Side D is a blank mirror and gives a great tool to adjust your vinyl player’s antiskating properly.

Beehoover are back, breaking a three year studio silence with an outrageous deluge of din in the form of new album The Devil And His Footmen, due for a release on Exile On Mainstream.

The multi-faceted clawing at the stoner doom mantle which defined their 2010 full length, Concrete Catalyst, has been taken to pastures fresh; self-recorded behind the locked doors of their own studio, Beehoover’s latest is a swirl of raw, sultry tones and rumbling octaves that strike chords with braggadocio 70’s hard rock as much as it does the thunderous rumble of Black Cobra and the jutting angles of Unsane. Beehoover are at their most rocking here, tangling the long hair of the headbangers with all the genres of beard in one matted toupee of oddball rhythms and histrionic vocals.

Formed in 2003, the German have released three albums to date, capitalising on their distinctive drum and bass concoction. The Devil And His Footmen will be the fourth album by Beehoover released on Exile On Mainstream, and is available as CD, LP and digital.

INTER ARMA and WINDHAND confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2014

Following last week's announcement of Loop as the main headliner for Roadburn 2014, the festival is excited to report that Relapse Records artists WINDHAND and INTER ARMA have also been confirmed for next years event, set for April10 − 13, 2014 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, the Netherlands. 

Walter Hoeijmakers from Roadburn: "Windhand’s S/T was definitely THEE psych/doom album of 2012, while anticipation of the band's upcoming album on Relapse is reaching a crescendo that will continue to build throughout the year and culminate in their main stage set on Saturday, April 12 at Roadburn 2014. Inter Arma's "Sky Burial" is a serious contender for this year's Roadburn Festival-related album of the year. Both Windhand and Inter Arma seem poised to rank among the regal line of iconic Relapse bands, and Roadburn is proud to welcome both bands on Saturday, April 12 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.”

Richmond, Virginia's WINDHAND cut their teeth worshipping at Iommi's school of a thousand riffs, fusing classic churning doom as smooth as melted chocolate with Electric Wizard-ish bong-cloud obscured psychedelia. Sparking your natural highness, the band locks into a mesmerizing sprawl of epic, doomic heaviness, a trancelike reverence that inspires lethargic, hypnotic head banging and is embellished with enough hazy psych to be a tripped-out soundtrack for some obscure war on drugs propaganda film. Meanwhile, vocalist Dorthia Cottrell's hellish howl beckons from the distance, swathed in distortion, transcending any earthly ideas of gender, and positioning the band firmly at the top of the pile of the current crop of female fronted metal outfits. 

Windhand will release “Soma”, their 2nd album on Relapse Records on September 13 in the Benelux, GAS and Finland and on September 16 in the UK and Europe. The album was recorded & mixed by the band's own Garrett Morris at The Darkroom & mastered by James Plotkin, in their hometown of Richmond, VA.

Also emerging (like Windhand) from the seemingly ever-fertile metal breeding grounds of Richmond, Virginia, INTER ARMA sports a sound that's difficult to pin down, as it continually changes and surprises with each passing album track. "Sky Burial" starts with a strong dose of the industrial infused black metal of "Volcano"-era Satyricon, then takes a decidedly Pink Floydian left turn for the next two tracks (the first is acoustic and the second of which culminates in an unexpectedly raucous blast of Cascadian black metal). They then introduce truly hellish sounding occult doom followed by caustic, repetitive noise rock in the vein of Unsane. They continue with epic, abrasive, majestic doom with vintage Gibby Haynes-style menacing vocals into another foreboding acoustic track and cap the album off with the title track, a noisy, doomy, mathy, blackened rock and roll experience that is rippling with evil and menace. Their live set will be a constantly evolving, emotionally devastating experience that is sure to leave us all uncomfortably numb.

The ORANGE GOBLIN has joined AHAB on a whaleride at SektorEvolution in Dresden (GER)

Yesterday night ORANGE GOBLIN from England have celebrated a big after-fishing party that was well prepared by the mighty German Funeral Doomsters AHAB, who once more proved that they are the unassailable whalers of all oceans. They sailed and killed with tracks from their actual album "The Giant" as well as from the prior releases. AHAB ended with "The Hunt" from the "The Call Of The Wretched Sea" debut to feed the GOBLIN with fresh whale meat. And he rocked like risen from the darkest depth of the sea. SAINT VITUS: Re-releasing "C.O.D." and "Die Healing" albums & touring Australia

SAINT VITUS recently announced the reissue plans of their two classic albums, ‘C.O.D.’ (originally released 1992) and ‘Die Healing’ (1995). The new, expanded editions of these albums will be released on August 16th (August 20th in North America).

The re-issues of 'COD' and ‘Die Healing’ will be available on CD and limited–edition coloured vinyl gatefold LPs. Remastered and enhanced with two previously unreleased bonus tracks, ‘C.O.D.’ features COUNT RAVEN’s Christian Linderson on vocals, while ‘Die Healing’ sees original SAINT VITUS singer Scott Reagers return to the mic. All formats can be pre-ordered on Season of Mist’s e-shop.

SAINT VITUS recently announced an Australian headlining tour. The trek, which gebins on July 18th in Brisbane, will travel through the country until the tour concludes on July 21st in Perth at The Rosemont. A full list of tour dates can be found below. SAINT VITUS is currently touring in support of their last album, 'Lillie: F-65'. The album, their first in 17 years, reunites the unmistakable guitar playing of co-founder Dave Chandler with the deeply resonate vocals of hard rock legend Scott “Wino” Weinrich.
